Two days ago, a forest fire broke out in the Novoaydarsky district of the Luhansk region. Initially, its scale was approximately 50 hectares, and yesterday morning it was localized.
The disaster did not end though.
The weather played a crucial role here. More precisely, gusty wind and high temperature. The fire spread to the village of Smolyanynovo.
In addition, according to the State Emergencies Ministry, the fire spread to forest areas near the villages of Kapitanove and Voronove. As of this morning, the extinguishing of individual foci of tanning continues.
Here are the key figures:
- according to the latest data, five people died as a result of the fires. President Zelensky, who flew to the Luhansk region, said that the data are not yet final;
- according to the head of state, the fire destroyed 24 buildings. Another 60 are seriously damaged.
The State Emergency Situations Ministry said this morning that the fire also destroyed 80 houses in Smolyanynovo.
The extent of the fire is also indicated by the number of people connected to extinguishing it. Rescuers specify that 1,125 people and 201 pieces of equipment are involved in extinguishing.
Aviation and drones were involved too.
Fire extinguishing equipment is also involved from Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Donetsk regions.

Head of the Luhansk regional administration Serhiy Gaidai notes that one of the versions is deliberate arson.
"We have to admit that a huge fire occurred. I do not exclude the fact of arson. Today it’s difficult to make some analysis because the fire has not completely disappeared. It is localized, but the fire and further it goes,” Gaidai stated.
According to preliminary data, as a result of fires, 5,000 hectares of land were burned.
The police are considering three versions of the fire – weather conditions, careless handling of fire, and deliberate arson.
Rescuers assure that there is no development of fires at this point.
Assistance to victims
The Cabinet of Ministers plans to allocate 11,000 USD of compensation to families who lost their homes in a fire.
Also, each victim will be allocated an additional 740 USD.
"The fire just dropped out of the sky," one of the local men comments on the situation.
