Fire in Kemerovo: CEO of Kemerovo confectionery arrested

Yulia Bogdanova was taken into custody till May 25

Kemerovo District Court arrested Yulia Bogdanova, the CEO of the Kemerovo confectionery, as Interfax reported from the courtroom.

“The court ordered to grant a request of the investigator to impose a pre-trial restraint for Bogdanova in the form of a detention for a period of preliminary investigation till May 25, 2018,” Dmytro Buntovskiy, the judge, said.

He stated, that the request of the investigation and prosecution concerning the necessary arrest of the entrepreneur is connected with the fact that she has a foreign passport and she can hide from the prosecution. Besides, according to the investigation team the woman can threaten the witnesses on the case and put pressure on them.

Yulia Bogdanova is accused of the violation of fire safety regulations which lead to death of two and more individuals.

According to the prosecution, Bogdanova’s employees have informed her multiple times about the problems with the fire safety system in the building, but she did not take any measures.

After the court announced the decision on arrest Bogdanova confirmed that she intended to appeal against the decision.

During the bail hearing the woman stated that she did not intend to hide from the prosecution, that she was going to assist the investigation and wanted to stay with her family. Bogdanova’s lawyer informed about the possibility to remit the sentence to the house imprisonment.

 As it was reported earlier, the shopping mall caught fire in the Russian city of Kemerovo on March 25. According to the Emergency Service, the fire occurred on the fourth floor where the cinema and children’s playgrounds were situated. The Investigative Committee of Russia considers two version of the tragedy: short circuit or use of the open fire.

According to the last data, 64 people died. It was noted that 41 of them are children. As at March 28, 27 bodies were identified. Five people were detained due to the tragedy.
