Donbas fighting

The non-stop shelling went on in Avdiivka, Donetsk region, where Russia-backed militants kept on storming positions of Ukraine’s government troops. Over a hundred missiles from Grad missile launchers hit the outposts in the town’s industrial zone. 152 mm artillery and tanks also fired in this area multiple times. 86 attacks on Ukrainian positions were reported on February 1.

Ukraine’s presidency in UN Security Council

Ukraine will be leading the UN Security Council in February 2017, while the presidency is to last until the end of February. President Poroshenko admitted there’s a lot of work for Ukraine to be done. ‘Ukraine takes on new important responsibilities at UN Security Council as of today – as President of the Council for the month of February. At UN we’ll continue using every opportunity to defend Ukraine against Russia’s military aggression,’ he tweeted.

Russia attacks Ukrainian aircraft

Ukrainian Navy Airplane An-26 was attacked near Odesa gas field in Black Sea. Russian Federation attacked from the plane from the drilling rigs which were captured earlier. At the same time, it was noted that the Ukrainian aircraft carried out the practice flight in the exclusive maritime zone of Ukraine. The plane received hull damage, but fulfilled the flight mission in the end.

Maintenance crew under attack

While pyrotechnical groups of the State Emergency Service and energy workers tried to reach the scene of possible loss of electrical connection in Avdiivka, they were attacked by illegal armed groups and had to stay low to avoid shelling. There were no casualties or victims reported.

Trilateral Contact Group meeting

As the meeting of the sides was concluded in Minsk, Trilateral Contact Group urged parties to the conflict in Donbas to remove weapons to the line, which was designated in the Memorandum of 19 September 2014. On top of that, Contact Group claimed that illegal armed groups in Donbas must provide necessary and secure operating conditions for the maintenance crews, which will restore water, gas and electricity supply in the areas of Avdiivka, as the city is remaining on the verge of humanitarian and industrial disaster. Special representative Martin Sajdik added that the next meeting of Trilateral Contact Group is scheduled for February 15.

Defense of Yanukovych delaying the case again

This time defense of fugitive ex-president Victor Yanukovych refused to review case materials in the state treason case, as the pre-trial investigation was not completed yet. Lawyers are referring to the Article 290 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, stating that there is no legal basis to make the defense review materials of the case until the pre-trial investigation is over. On top of that, Ukrainian prosecutors claimed that Yanukovych defense has in fact already reviewed the first volume of the case, his lawyers called that prosecutors’ “wishful thinking”.
