The lawyer Nelia Shtepa Oleksandr Shadrin said this to Ukrinform agency correspondent.
“Nelia Shtepa won the case at the ECtHR and received monetary compensation for violation of her right to freedom and a fair trial,” the lawyer said.
According to him, the compensation amounted to 3,600 euros.
The lawyer said that his client is now in Slovyansk and is awaiting another summon to court in Kharkiv. She is not obliged to stay at home around the clock until the court decides on a preventive measure. At the same time, he added, Shtepa was not going to leave Ukraine that she loved the country and hoped for a fair trial.
Shadrin informed that a hearing of Kharkiv district court in Shtepa’s case was to take place on January 15, but the lawyers could not arrive for legit reasons, and the meeting was postponed until February 11.
Earlier it was reported that Nelia Shtepa was arrested on July 11, 2014. She is accused of encroaching on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of people and of creating of a terrorist group.
On September 20, 2017, Shtepa was released from the pre-trial detention center under 24-hour house arrest in Slovyansk. On September 21, it became known that she was wearing an electronic bracelet.
Since January 2018, after the term of her house arrest has ended, she is not subject to any preventive measure.
Kharkiv Region Prosecutor's Office brought the case to court back in October 2014. And since then it has been passed from one court to another.
In October 2019, the European Court of Human Rights found that Ukraine violated the rights of ex-Mayor of Slovyansk Nelia Shtepa, who is accused of separatism. The court ruled this on October 24.
The court ruled that Ukraine should pay Shtepa 2,600 euros for non-pecuniary damages and 1,000 euros for compensation for legal costs.
