It is noted that the SSUFSCP has analyzed 3,500 daily school menus since the beginning of the year. Violations of healthy eating were detected in 800 cases (23%).
“Since January 1, 2021, Ukraine has a new Sanitary Regulation for general secondary education. The most important thing that distinguishes this document from the sanitary rules of 2001 is the new approaches to nutrition. The requirements of the document are based on the principles of healthy eating recommended by the World Health Organization,” the statement says.
This document defines the diet of schoolchildren and establishes a list of products that are prohibited from selling in canteens and vending machines. According to the new sanitary regulations, the diet in schools must be varied and must include grains, potatoes, fruits, vegetables, milk, dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, legumes, and fats.
The document contains separate requirements for the preparation process for each of these products. For example, you can only use refined oil for frying potatoes, and sugar or any other sweeteners cannot be added to vegetables and fruits.
Chief sanitary doctor of Ukraine Viktor Lyashko called the new menu healthy and balanced, stressing that it limits the daily amount of salt, sugar, flour, and confectionery products, and also excludes some types of products in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).
It should be noted that last year's inspections showed that there were violations in every second institution of secondary education related to unsatisfactory material and technical conditions, inadequate water supply, lack of quality drinking water and other problems.
