The European Parliament quite sharply reacts to the problems of political prisoners in different countries, but completely ignores the fact of repressions faced in Ukraine by Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party, MP Viktor Medvedchuk as Pershiy Nezalezhnyi TV channel reported citing MEP Maximilian Krah.

He underlined that his colleagues in the European Parliament constantly demonstrate cynicism and double standards.

“Cynicism and double standards are the essence of what we see here. The EU says that the word is one of the human rights, but in fact the EU protects human rights based on its political and economic interests. Here you see the situation with the channels. Let's look at another situation. In Moscow, Alexei Navalny was imprisoned for economic crimes, and all this is being discussed here. But there is another person who is under arrest, Viktor Medvedchuk, and he is accused based on political issues. Everyone in this building knows Alexei Navalny, but no one wants to hear Viktor Medvedchuk's name. And we need to overcome these double standards and talk about it. If you talk about the problems in Moscow, you are also talking about the problems in Kyiv. And if you say Alexei Navalny, you should immediately remember in your head that there are problems with political prisoners in Ukraine, and we should talk about that. These double standards will remain here until people recognize that yes, the EU works on the principles of double standards,” the MEP noted.

Kra has urged his colleagues to recognize that there is a problem of double standards in the European Parliament, which will persist until this is openly recognized.

“If you talk about problems in Moscow, talk about problems in Kyiv. And if you say Alexei Navalny, then you should instantly remember in your head that there are also problems with political prisoners in Ukraine, and we should talk about this. These double standards will persist here until people admit that yes, the EU is working on the principles of double standards," the MEP underlined.

On October 12, Pechersk district court made a decision on the restrictive measure in the form of the house arrest for Medvedchuk on the new suspicion until December 7. In his turn, Medvedchuk stated that he would continue to fight the current government, regardless of how much the repression against him intensifies. He stressed that together with the Opposition Platform - For Life party, they will continue to protect the interests of the Ukrainian people.

"Don't the prosecutors be alarmed. I'm ready for everything, I'll do whatever the law says to, but at that, I'll be still fighting this government, just like I did before - actually, just the way our party used to fight and will ckeep on fighting", Medvedchuk stressed.

Earlier, MP from Opposition Platform - For Life  Renat Kuzmin claimed that the State Bureau of Investigations summoned Medvedchuk - allegedly for him to look into materials of the already closed case on the state treason and violation of the rules and customs of war. At the same time, Kuzmin said, representatives of the Office of Prosecutor General of Ukraine attempted to hand the politician a new suspicion of state treason and aiding terrorism. However, Medvedchuk's lawyers did not let the prosecutors do that, breaking the law.

On October 8, the Prosecutor General's Office and the Security Service of Ukraine announced a new suspicion against Medvedchuk, charging him with state treason and aiding terrorism. The new charges are related to the breach of coal supplies from South Africa to Ukraine, and the assistance with coal supplies from the occupied Donbas in 2014.

As we reported, in the first criminal case, Pechersk district court decided to extend the house arrest for Viktor Medvedchuk until October 31.

Earlier, on February 20, the National Security and Defense Council imposed sanctions on eight people (three of them Ukrainians), including Viktor Medvedchuk, Chairman of the Opposition Platform for Life Political Council, and his wife, Oksana Marchenko.

On May 13, Kyiv court chose the restriction measure for Viktor Medvedchuk, the opposition MP and Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party. On July 9, the court extended the house arrest of Viktor Medvedchuk until September 7. The lawyers of the politician stated about the recusal of the judge Serhiy Vovk right after the end of the court session. However, the court declined the appeal on recusal of the judge and prosecutor. On July 30, the Kyiv Court of Appeal refused to satisfy the appeal op the lawyers of Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life Viktor Medvedchuk against the extension of the politician's house arrest until September 7.

The Opposition Platform - For Life responded to this legal arbitrariness, stressing that the political persecution of MP Taras Kozak has only one purpose: reprisals against independent media, 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK TV channels, and the destruction of freedom of speech in Ukraine.

Commenting on the situation, Viktor Medvedchuk emphasized that his lawyers were fully prepared to appeal against the measure of restraint and they have evidence that refutes the prosecution's accusation and prove the illegality of applying house arrest to him.

Thus, the defense filed an appeal against the decision of the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv on extension of the measure of restraint for the politician. However, on July 30, the Kyiv Court of Appeal denied it, despite the defeat of all the arguments of the prosecution.
