Yesterday, Nathan Gill, MEP from the UK, sent the deputy inquiry to High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini regarding the oppression of the freedom of speech in Ukraine and the intention of the Ukrainian authorities to close 112 Ukraine and NewsOne TV channels.
Ms. Mogherini will have two weeks to deal with this case, after which, she must provide a written answer. However, if the response letter is not received, this question will still remain within the walls of the EU leadership.
Reportedly, freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Ukraine are fundamental obligations of our state in accordance with the Association Agreement with the EU. This is why the representatives of the European Parliament are deeply concerned by the situation around the Ukrainian broadcasters and fully support 112 Ukraine and NewsOne TV channels in their fight for the right to speak.
The staff of 112 Ukraine TV channel insists that the steps made by the Ukrainian Parliament, which aim to apply sanctions against 112 Ukraine TV channel are nothing but a political decision; there is not enough evidence to make such decision, which badly lacks argumentation and may be considered unconstitutional.
