EU to study law on Ukrainian language and to comment on it

The European Commission will study the law on the Ukrainian language and will comment on it. High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said as Maya Kosianchic reported to DW.

“We know that the Ukrainian parliament has adopted the new law on the Ukrainian language. Now we are waiting for the publication of the final version of this law in order to study its content," Kosianchic pointed out. She also added that the EU insisted on sending the law to the review of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe “until the day it comes to force”.

On April 25, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted the draft law #5670-d on the provision of the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state one on the second reading and in general.

Earlier we reported that the status of Ukraine's state language will be endorsed over the course of the next ten years when the government implements the respective program.

On February 28, 2018, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine produced a ruling in regards to the law “On the principles of the state language policy” #5029-VI (the so-called “Kolesnychenko-Kivalov” law).
