Time of grief and joy
The Dormition Fast is considered to be the same strict as the Great Fast. The main goal of the Dormition Fast is the preparation of a human for the Dormition of the Mother of God. This holiday commemorates the death of the Mother of God and Her Dormition. It means hope for the attainment of eternal life.
The fast is the mean to delve into yourself; it aims to help to stop and acknowledge everything. A human becomes more diligent in prayer, virtues and becomes closer to God.
Blessed Virgin Mary lived in Jerusalem after the Ascension of Jesus, preaching Gospel equally with apostles. Once during the pray, showed up to her and Apostle Gabriel and ushered in that in three days the Her soul will leave the body. She prepared for this transition with fast and intense prayer.
Three days later, at the house of John the Apostle, where Mary lived, other Apostles lived: God arranged things miraculously and all Apostles returned on that day from distant travels when they preached Christ. According to the Tradition of the Church, the ethereal light shone the room with everyone gathered at the moment of Dormition of the Mother of God. Christ appeared in this heavenly light surrounded by angels and admitted the soul of His earthborn Mother.
The Apostles buried the body of the Mother of God in Gethsemane, where the Empty tomb is situated and where parents of Mary and Saint Joseph were buried. Accompanying the coffin, the Apostles and other citizens of Jerusalem carried lamps and sang psalms.
Jewish priest Aphonia pushed the coffin, wanting to turn it over but his both hands were cut off: invisible anger did it. ‘Now you see that Christ is the true God’, - Apostle Peter said to Aphonia. The last immediately repented and his hands healed.
Thomas the Apostle, who came late for burial, was very grieved and the Apostles allowed him to open the entrance to the cave. When they opened the coffin, they found out that the body of the Mother of God was not there and assured in the miraculous dormition of Her Body. In the evening on the same day, the Mother of God showed up to the Apostles and said: “Rejoice! I am here with you for all days”.
