Donetsk Prosecutor's Office demands court to deprive Russian language of regional status

Donetsk region Prosecutor’s Office demands the decision of the Regional Council, which the Russian language is declared regional on the territory, to be canceled, as it is reported on the Facebook page of Donetsk Prosecutor’s Office.

The Prosecutor’s Office of the region determined that the decision of Donetsk Regional Council of September 16, 2012 on the implementation of Ukraine’s Law demands on the basis of state’s language policy in Donetsk region, Russian is recognized as regional and equal to Ukrainian.

At the same time, on February 28, 2018, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine found this law discordant with Ukraine’s Constitution.

“Donetsk Regional Council did not take any measures to cancel this decision,” the message of the Prosecutor’s Office says.

“Donetsk District Court received a lawsuit to remove the violations and declare this decision illegal and invalid,” the Prosecutor’s Office informs.

Reportedly, the court deprived the Russian language of the status of a regional one in Mykolaiv region.
