Donbas reintegration law will make it impossible to prosecute Ukrainian soldiers for the so-called war crimes, Iryna Lursenko, MP from Petro Poroshenko blok and the President’s representative in the Parliament, told Espresso.TV.

According to her, as the law announces Russia an aggressor country and claimes Ukraine’s need to defend itself, it makes the Donbas conflict not an internal affair, but the international one, which it is.

“From the legislative point of view, they, the defenders of Ukraine, will have additional protection and explanation, if, God forbid, Russia chooses to use the Hague Tribunal and threaten our soldiers, the way they did it with Georgia. This document is accepted, and the definition is accepted that we need military, because we’re defending ourselves,” she explained.

Apart from that, she reminded that the law will add Ukraine leverage in issues of US lethal arms and UN peacekeepers.

As it was rewported earlier, in the second day of the discussion, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved, in principle, the so-called Donbas reintegration draft law. The law defines the legal regime of certain parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions as temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. It also introduces the term “Russian occupational power” into Ukrainian legislation, thus stating Ukraine is defending its territory - an essential condition for the deployment of UN peacekeepers.
