The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution (SAP) exposed a corruption scheme on misappropriating almost $5.7 million on purchasing petrol for the Ministry of Defence, according to the press service of the NABU.
It was informed that today the NAB and SAP detectives carried out a number of searches and detained two people based on their results: the Deputy Minister of Defence and the Head of the Department of state purchases for the ministry.
The prosecution believes that at the beginning of 2016, the committee on the competitive procurement of the ministry organized an open competition on procuring petrol. On April 26, 2016, the committee made a choice in favour of the best price offered. On May 13 and 18, fourteen agreements were made with the distributor on procuring petrol in excess of over $37 million.
It has been so far established that in July-August a number of additional agreements were made, in which the cost of the petrol was groundlessly increased by about 16% from the primary. As a result, the distributor obtained state money accounting to almost $5.7 million.
The prosecution is investigating the case as misappropriation of property by malversation.
