The Defender of Ukraine Day is celebrated today, October 14. The holiday honours and commemorates the courage and heroism of the defenders of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Its slogan is “Strength of the unbowed”.
The President’s decree to make this day a public holiday was approved by the Ukrainian parliament on March 5, 2015. Thus the Soviet celebration on February 23 (the Defender of the Fatherland Day) was replaced with another one, which is Ukrainian in origin.
October 14, by the Orthodox tradition, is the Intercession of the Theotokos (Pokrova by local tradition, - 112.int). Pokrova was the most respected holiday for the Ukrainian Cossacks.
This day is the official day of Ukrainian Cossacks. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was also created on October 14.
Holiday concerts, exhibitions, marches, and festivals all over the country are planned for today in Kyiv.
