A Lexus ran over a group of pedestrians in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, on Wednesday evening. Alyona Zaitseva who drove the Lexus violated the road traffic, crashing into Volkswagen Touareg, which threw her car towards the pavement. Both drivers survived, but Lexus ran over a group of eleven people. Five pedestrians received lethal injuries; another six were taken to a hospital with injuries of various degrees of severity.
New video from the security cameras was published from the car accident scene in Kharkiv.
Kharkiv City Prosecutor’s Office officially filed charges against Alyona Zaitseva, the 20-year-old driver who drove Lexus RX. According to the Chief of Kharkiv Region Police Oleg Bekh, Zaitseva previously violated road traffic before; she was fined three times for such violations.
At the moment the court is supposed to choose the restriction measure for Zaitseva and to solve the matter of arrest of her property as demanded by prosecutor’s office and 112 broadcasts this.
Zaitseva faced charges with road traffic violation, which resulted in deaths of several people (Part 3, Article 286 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code). The maximum penalty, in this case, is ten years-long imprisonment.
Earlier, the prosecution stated that Zaitseva used opiates not long before the tragedy occurred.
