Constitutional Court’ decision allows adopting new language law

The decision of the Constitutional Court regarding Kolesnychenko-Kivalov language law allows the Verkhovna Rada to adopt a new law on language. This was said by Parliament Speaker Andrei Parubiy at the beginning of the morning session of the Verkhovna Rada on air of Rada TV channel.

Parubiy congratulated everyone on this decision of the court. He stressed that the language issue is regulated by the Constitution of Ukraine and according to its article 10 the state language in Ukraine is Ukrainian.

As it was reported earlier at its hearing on 28 February, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine produced a ruling in regards to whether the law “On the principles of the state language policy” (the so-called “Kolesnychenko-Kivalov” law).

Nevertheless, Ukrainian Truth has informed that the court’s press service told no final ruling has been made yet – the text is being proofread and its final version is expected to be published in the nearest future.

The Law "On the Principles of language policy", submitted to the Verkhovna Rada by MPs Vadym Kolesnichenko and Sergey Kivalov. According to the law, the language of the Verkhovna Rada and acts of public authorities, is Ukrainian. When it comes to the language of elections, referendums, science, and education - the focus is on the human right to freely use any language.
