Constantinople Church can provide autocephaly without consent of other churches

The Patriarchate of Constantinople can provide a church with autocephaly without any agreements. Hromadske reported that this decision was made on September 2 at the Bishops’ Council of the Constantinople Church in Istanbul.  

The Council discussed the question whether the Constantinople Church is allowed to provide autonomy, autocephaly to the church which asks for it without the consent of the other churches.

Reportedly, the answer to the question was affirmative.

According to the mass media, the process of providing the Tomos might take a month as all the actions of this Council must be documented and approved by the synod.

Earlier, the Bishops’ Council of the Constantinople Church began on September 1 and will last till September 3. The main topic of the Council is the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox church. It is expected that after negotiations with the bishops from all over the world, the Patriarchate of Constantinople can make a final decision concerning the terms of Tomos provision.
