Clashes with police at court hearing Sternenko's case

On February 23, Odesa court announced a sentence to Serhiy Sternenko having ruled out 7 years of imprisonment for him. A protest rally was organized at court, during which the clashes with law enforcement officers took place, Dumskaya reports.

"Activists who came to support the ex-head of the Odesa Roght Sector are blocking exits from the court to prevent him from being taken to a pre-trial detention center. They are burning tires and using explosive packages," the statement said.

Clashes broke out between protesters and police. There was a commotion during the announcement of the sentence.

Earlier it was reported that Serhiy Sternenko was found guilty of abducting a person and sentenced to 7 years and 3 months in prison.

The court recognized the seized during the search items as admissible evidence. Sternenko himself claims that the search of his home was carried out without a lawyer, with whom he was not allowed to contact. The testimony of Serhiy Shcherbych, who accuses Sternenko of his abduction, was also found credible.

The court also ruled for the confiscation of half of Sternenko's property as a punishment and decided to take the activist into custody in the courtroom.

According to Babel, after the verdict was announced, Sternenko made a statement in which he stated that he did not plead guilty and considered the case a politically motivated persecution. Sternenko's lawyer, Masi Nayyem, said the defense would appeal.
