President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Turchynov paid tribute to the liquidators of the disaster at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The leaders of the country wrote as address on their Facebook pages.
"Ukraine and the whole world will never forget the terrible event of April 26, 1986. Chornobyl will forever remain an unhealed wound on the heart of the country, on the hearts of millions of people ... And today we must not only do everything so that this tragedy will never happen again. We must learn from those events. The modern Chornobyl zone should become a place for new progressive technologies, a territory for change, "Poroshenko wrote.
In his turn, the head of Ukrainian government noted the scale of the disaster for the whole country.
"The Chornobyl disaster, a terrible catastrophe, destroyed millions of lives. It’s a tragedy for Ukraine and the world. We remember," Groysman wrote on his Facebook page.
Today, April 26 is commemoration date of the disaster of Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, - one of the most terrible technogenic catastrophes in the history of mankind.
"Today is the commemoration date of the Chornobyl tragedy. More than thirty years have passed since the largest nuclear catastrophe of a planetary scale. One way or another, the Chornobyl disaster affected millions of our compatriots, led to severe environmental, social and economic, medical consequences, not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole Europe, and we feel its fatal echoes to this day. We must do everything to overcome this universal tragedy, " the message on the Defense Council website says.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council stressed that over the past decades people have not forgotten the heroism of the liquidators of the accident.
As it was reported earlier, the construction works began in Chornobyl exclusion zone in Nobvemner 2017; the nuclear waste repository will be built in the restricted area of Kyiv region. According to UNN news agency, the opening ceremony took place on November 9; Ukrainian company Energoatom will be the one supervising the construction process.
According to the Minister of Energy and Coal Production Ihor Nasalyk, by building its own nuclear waste repository, Ukraine will be able to refuse the service offered by Russia, which costs Kyiv more than 7 million dollars annually.
