"We received a message from the environmental inspector that the automatic alarm of the radiation meter went off showing that radiation background exceeded the natural level of radiation," said Tetyana Skuba, head of the Communications Department of the Kherson region National Police.
It is a scrap of ferrous metals weighing 39.5 tons. It is still unknown where the cargo came from.
It is noted that at 6:30 a.m. the truck entered the territory of the seaport. When it was going through the control post of border guards, the Yantar system (for radiation control) reacted to it. The car with radioactive scrap is currently being guarded.
According to Oleksandr Leshchenko, head of the Civil Defense Department of the Kherson City Council, it is already known who transported the scrap and to whom it was transported. There was an agreement that the recipient at his own expense has to call to Kherson representatives of a specialized company that inspect the cargo. Anything within the normal radiation background will be accepted as a cargo of scrap and sent on. The rest will be taken away by this company for further liquidation.
The representative of the City Council noted that the authorities will make sure that dangerous cargo does not remain on the territory of Kherson. He also informed that the commission on technogenic and ecological safety and emergencies had already held a meeting.
Earlier, in July 2020, the Verkhovna Rada legalized the metal scrap market. The document improves the regulation of scrap market participants by simplifying the procedure for carrying out scrap transactions and abolishing the outdated system of dividing scrap into household and industrial.
