The elections to the Verkhovna Rada became almost a greater triumph for the “new faces” in Ukrainian politics than the victory of Volodymyr Zelensky over Petro Poroshenko in the presidential election in spring. The brightest proof is the results of the elections in single-member districts. Unpopular candidates from president’s Servant of the People party — from a provincial wedding photographer to an amusement park director — defeated the oligarchs, governors, and veterans of Ukrainian politics who sat in the Verkhovna Rada four convocations in a row.
