High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated about the risk of the further escalation at the border of Ukraine, where Russia has deployed over 100,000 soldiers as the European Union External Action reported.
“The Russian military build-up at the Ukrainian border is very concerning. There are more than 100,000 Russian troops amassing at the Ukrainian borders and in Crimea. The risk of further escalation is evident,” he noted.
Borrell thanked Ukraine for its restrained response and urged Russia to de-escalate tensions at the Ukrainian border.
According to him, the message of all Ministers was clear: a complete confirmation of strong support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea and request of full implementation of the Minsk agreements.
Borrell underlined that the EU will continue to support efforts of the Normandy Format. He confirmed that the EU would participate in the Crimean platform on August 23.
As we reported, the spring PACE session has begun in Strasbourg. It is planned to hold debates on “the Russian threat to peace aspirations in Europe”.
Besides, the PACE initiated the signature of a political statement about condemning Russian military escalation and provocations by the Russian side near the border of Ukraine.
Moreover, Borrell urged Russia to withdraw troops from the border of Ukraine.
Russia continues to build up its forces near the Ukrainian border. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that there are 80,000 Russian soldiers and 30,000 pro-Russian militants near the border with Ukraine.
