The blockade of the Sea of Azov by Russia is not only a political and economic pressure on Ukraine. State Border Guard Service speaker Oleh Slobodyan said this on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.

"It is generally advisable to assess it now as not only a political and economic pressure on Ukraine, because we already see that this affects country’s reputation and the work of Ukrainian ports in the Azov Sea. This has a wider range of pressure areas and consequences," he stressed.

Slobodyan also stressed that the blockade creates problems both for international partners who trade with Ukraine through ports in the Azov Sea, and for residents of coastal areas where a great number of fishermen live and for whom fishing is a key source of income.

"These are risks that need to be assessed and the countermeasures must be found now," Slobodyan said.

As for the probable Russian invasion in Kherson region, Border Guard Service can only be responsible for its sector of the common system of counteraction.

"The Border Guard Service operates within the same idea as the Joint Forces operation headquarters and national security and defense sector. The complex of countermeasures against possible military threats in the Sea of Azov is carried out throughout Ukraine. The essence of the measures is the integrated use of available forces and means, the border service in this plan takes place only its own segment, "he stressed.

As it was reported earlier, the Naval Forces of Ukraine state the tense situation in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The Commander of Navy Ihor Voronchenko informed about this during the opening ceremony of Ukrainian-American military exercises Sea Breeze 2018.

The commander stressed that it was about ignoring the norms of international maritime law by the Russian Federation, as well as the continuing annexation of Ukrainian economic zone in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, "especially in the Sea of Azov," as he said.
