Our project Ukraine: a bird’s eye view has the new city to show you. Today, we will show you the western city of Ternopil.
One of the explanations of the name of the city is its situation in the territory covered with thorny plants (tern in the Ukrainian language). Another explanation states that Ternopil was founded by Polish nobleman Jan Amor Tarnowski and his surname consonant with the name of the city (until 1944 the city was called Tarnopil).
The emblem of Ternopil depicts a castle, which is preserved even today and it is a symbol of the city. Its construction was finished in 1548 and lasted eight years. The damn-bridge was also made at this place on the river, which formed Ternopil Lake after it spilled.
The city is situated on the banks of Seret River. It seems that it has a lot of air as there are no hovering high-rise blocks; a person feels open space and freedom here. There are many parks and garden squares in the city, particularly, the visitors of Ternopil and tourists might walk in Hydropark (waterpark), beautiful Taras Shevchenko Park and visit the island of lovers.
One of the memorable landmarks of the city is the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Dominican Cathedral that was built in the XVIII century in baroque style. It is the memorial of religious architecture and the cathedral church of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ternopil.
