If a ban on electricity imports is introduced at the legislative level, Belarus may refuse to buy electricity, which Energoatom recently started to supply to the country. Head of the Committee on Energy and Housing and Utilities Services Andriy Gerus said at a press conference, as 112.ua correspondent reports.
“If this is brought to the political level of the law, and neighboring countries do not have such laws, then they can treat this with peculiarities and stop buying electricity that Energoatom exports to Belarus. Let Energoatom export, so that foreign exchange earnings can come to the country. If after some time the question of import to Ukraine in exchange for export arises, then we will talk about it. This will be a separate conversation,” the MP said.
Gerus stressed that today Ukraine has no need to import electricity. In addition, there are instruments for restricting imports: they can be introduced by the dispatcher of Ukrenergo regardless of any new laws, restrictions at the level of National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities, or the Cabinet of Ministers (it can set a duty). There is also an option of imposing the sanctions by the National Security and Defense Council.
Earlier, the Energy Ministry has prepared a bill #3657, which provides for a ban on the import of electricity from Russia and Belarus, the document was approved by the government. Acting Minister of Energy Olga Buslavets stated that she opposed the admission of electricity from Russia and Belarus in Ukraine, which has enough from its own generation. According to her, the import ban should act until the end of 2021.
