Reportedly, Balukh announced a termless hunger strike on March 19, 2018 and ceased it during a prison transfer.
As his lawyer Dmytro Dinze said, Balukh might have ulcer and/or pancreatitis.
"Balukh’s persecution is directly linked with the Ukrainian flag he refused to remove from his home, and his unwavering opposition to Russia’s occupation of his Ukrainian homelan," Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group states. In November 2016, Balukh put a plaque renaming his home No. 18 "Heroes of Nebesna Sotnya St" in memory of Maidan activists killed during Revolution of Dignity. The head of the local council demanded to remove it bu Balukh rejected. During an irregular ‘search’ of his home, 90 bullets and several TNT explosive devices were allegedly ‘found’ in his attic.
