“The autocephaly is not a concern of just Ukrainian orthodox Christians. It is a question of our Ukrainian independence. It is one of the backbones of the Ukrainian state, Ukrainian nation, Ukrainian national security. And, finally, of the entire world’s geopolitics,” he noted.
According to the head of the state, because of this, the idea of the autocephaly is not supported by Moscow and its fifth column inside Ukraine.
“Counterwork is large-scale and systematic. There are no reasons to think that we got the tomos. We have two things to do to get it – pray and fight,” he said.
At the same time, Poroshenko believes that Ukraine should have the autocephaly.
“They say, one can not stop the idea which time has come. And it is about the idea of the autocephaly. The logic of the historical process leads us to the tomos, the logic of the development of our nation and country,” he noted.
According to the President, such church should be independent.
“It is not about the creation of a state church, churches were and are independent of the state, it is provided by the Constitution. I insist that the church in Ukraine should be independent of state, and of a foreign state in particular,” he repeated again.
Poroshenko added that due to this he wrote to Pope Francis and recently Vatican’s State Secretary stated that “Pope Francis gladly notes that the authority in Ukraine ensures a complete observance of the religious freedom for the followers of all the affiliation”.
Earlier, Petro Poroshenko signed a statement to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew concerning the provision of the autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on April 17, 2018. This questions is being considered.
