When detaining former MP Oleksandr Shepelev suspected of attempted murder and embezzlement, the law enforcement officers found a number of documents on him, including a fake Ukrainian passport and an ID badge of the so-called ministry of state security of the “DNR”, as press secretary of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Larysa Sarhan wrote on Facebook.
According to her, now the Main department of military prosecution is conducting a pre-trial investigation on the suspicion of state treason.
Today at 11:30, a preventive measure will be chosen for Shepelev. The prosecution demands his arrest.
As we reported earlier, former MP Shepelev was detained on Feb. 8. Back in 2012, he was accused of embezzling funds of Rodovid Bank in the sum of over $8 million, as well as participating in the embezzlement of $11,6 million allocated for re-financing the National Bank in March-May 2009. Moreover, he is suspected of an attempted murder of former shareholder of Rodovid Bank Serhiy Didchenko.
He was detained in Hungary in July 2013, and then extradited to Ukraine. On June 6, 2014, he ran away from the hospital where he was detained and treated after extradition. Interpol started looking for him in September 2014. In less than a year, he was found not far from Moscow and detained by a Moscow court.
In April 2015, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine addressed their Russian counterparts inquiring to extradite the former official. However, in August 2016, the Russian Prosecution officially refused to extradite Shepelev and released him.
