Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution of Ukraine (SAP) is to demand the detention of Odesa Mayor Hennady Trukhanov with an alternative of bail, as Prosecutor General of SAP Nazar Kholodnitdky said in a briefing.
“Three people were detained yesterday, while todayNABU (National ANti-corruption bureau) detectives, based on the information from the State Border Guard Service, detained the mayor of Odesa and his deputy. The investigation is underway. They and their lawyers have already studied the statement of suspicion. The inquiry for choosing a preventive measure has been submitted. The prosecution will ask for a detention or $1.87 million bail for Odesa mayor, $1.1 million - for his deputy, and $375.000 for all other participants of this proceeding.” Klolodnytdkiy said.
In this case, eight people were informed on suspicion, six of them detained, while two others are wanted. The officials are suspected of embezzlement by malversation.
The NABU detectives under the guidance of the prosecutors of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office served charges on Trukhanov due to the suspect of the embezzlement through the malpractice. Moreover, three people were detained on the same criminal proceeding.
The NABU began the investigation in November 2016 on the purchase of the former plant 'Krayan' at an overvalued price by the city council. According to the bureau, the building was sold for $149, 080 in the beginning of 2016 and the Mayor office of Odesa purchased it in September 2016 for $ 6.9 million.
