Anti-Corruption Bureau begins pretrial investigation of embezzlements in Ukraine’s army

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has begun the pretrial investigation of the facts published by the journalists of “Nashi Groshi” (Our Money) show on the investigation of the embezzlements in the purchases in the defense sphere, as the NABU reported.

It is reported that the detectives have put information to the Unified register of pretrial investigations on February 26 and has begun the investigation on the signs of the commitment of the criminal proceeding due to the appropriation or embezzlement by an official.

The NABU also noted that some of the events described by the journalists are the subjects of the investigation.

February 25, journalist investigations Bihus.Info, Nashi Hroshi program alleged that Igor Gladkovsky, the son of close Poroshenko ally Oleh Gladkovsky, deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, organized a corruption scheme to smuggle spare military-equipment parts from Russia in 2015. State defense facilities purchased the smuggled spare parts from private companies linked to Hladkovsky and his friends at highly inflated prices. Ukroboronprom state concern, which supervises defense industry production facilities, knew the origin of the smuggled parts but agreed to purchase them.

Igor Gladkovsky, along with Vitaliy Zhukov (former advisor of “Ukroboronprom” Director, the member of supervisory council of “Meridian” company till 2013, former assistant of Yuriy Tereshchenko, ex-Head of State Service of export control, Oleg Gladkovsky’s friend, - ed.) and Andriy Rogoza (CEO of “Inter Steel Ltd.”, - ed.) were supplying smuggled Russian components and components from the Ukrainian military units through straw companies at prices 2-4 times higher than market ones.

The same day, First Deputy Secretary of National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) of Ukraine Oleg Gladkovsky appealed to the law enforcement agencies asking to check the information published in the journalist investigation Bihus.Info. That information contains facts about illegal deals in purchasing in the army. 

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko supported this demand and suspended Gladkovsky. Ukrainian presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko has initiated impeachment proceedings against Poroshenko, as his company was involved as a straw company.

“Ukroboronprom” called the investigation of the journalists of “Nashi Groshi” (Our Money) show on the embezzlements by concern’s officials “manipulations”.
