The workers of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine (GPU) arrested former officer of the capital's special police unit Berkut, who was in search for a long time for illegal detention and beating of 18 activists of Automaidan during the Revolution of Dignity. This was reported by the press service of the GPU.
"Former officer of the capital's special police unit Berkut was detained. He was on the wanted list for a long time for abuse of power and illegal detention by prior agreement with other Berkut workers of 18 Automaidan activists at night on January 22, 2014 on Shchors and Hrushevsky streets in Kyiv, using violence and damaging 11 of their cars, "the statement said.
The detainee is also charged of forging the report and providing false testimony, accusations of Automaidan activists in serious crimes for which they were arrested and brought to trial for allegedly hooligan actions.
Currently, the man was announced about suspicion under Part 2 Art. 28, Part 3 Art. 365, Part 1 Art. 366, Part 2 Art. 384 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and an appeal for choosing detention as preventive measure against him was submitted to the court.
Pre-trial investigation continues. In particular, the evidence is gathered for the prosecution of other accomplices of these crimes, according to Prosecutor General's Office information.
Earlier it was reported that Berkut officers suspected of Euromaidan crimes were fired. They can be reinstated in case of acquittal in court, - Ukraine's National Police.
