In the results of the past wars and current armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine, almost third of the country’s territory is contaminated by the explosive hazard. Mykola Chechotkin, the Head of the State Emergency Service claimed this as Liga.net reported.
According to him, the Emergency Service in cooperation with the international organizations dew up the electronic database where the information on the location of the explosive items is gathered.
“It is established that almost 30% of the state’s territory is contaminated by the explosive hazard as a result of the previous wars and aggression from the Russian side. Particularly, more than 4,000 of the land plots were defined as the possible contaminated by the explosive items and it makes 1, 146,000 hectares. The presence of the explosive remnants confirmed at the 453,000 hectares,” Chechotkin said.
It is an especially acute issue at the released territories of Donetsk (238,00 ha), Luhansk (197,000 ha) regions. 42,800 ha contaminated in Odesa region, 30,400 ha in Kyiv region, 18,100 ha in Kharkiv region, 1,400 ha in Zhytomyr region and 1,300 ha in Mykolaiv region.
At the same time, since the beginning of the Russia aggression of Russia, the minefields, new types of the ammunition, booby-traps and other dangerous explosive items, which frequently disguised as the items of everyday use appeared in Ukraine.
Since 2014, more than 25,000 hectares were checked at the released territories of Donbas and 160,000 of the explosive remnants were defused.
During the liquidation of the consequences of the explosions at the ammunition depots near Balakliya, Kalynivkka, Svatove; more than 66,000 ha were cleared and 45,000 of the explosive hazards were defused.
Earlier we reported that 9,000 km2 of the occupied Donbas is contaminated with the explosive hazards.
Also, UN reported that Donbas is one of the most mined regions in the world and Ukraine ranked first in the world in terms of the number of deaths from mines. In his turn, the Minister of Temporary Occupied Territories Vadym Chernysh asserts that before the end of hostilities in the Donbas region, it is meaningless to take measures to demine the territory.
