The level of poverty by the absolute criterion (expenditures below the minimum wage) among the working population in Ukraine for the first half of 2020 is 42.4%. The Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat following a meeting of the Committee on Social Policy and Protection of Veterans' Rights.
Head of the Population Research Sector of the Ptukha Institute of Demography Lyudmyla Cherenko noted that the situation is not expected to improve in 2021.
The Chairperson of the Committee Halyna Tretyakova noted that the issue of the subsistence level remains unresolved. According to her, there are more than a dozen bills, and one of them - the draft on regulation of the subsistence level and create the conditions for its increase (No. 3515) the Committee will consider next week.
MP Halyna Tretyakova said that overcoming poverty is one of the main tasks of the Poverty Alleviation Strategy, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The strategy aims to increase citizens' incomes, make social services and infrastructure accessible to the population, and minimize poverty for the most vulnerable, such as children, adolescents, people over 75, and unemployed retirees.
An important step is the monetization of subsidies, increasing the number of benefits for orphans and children deprived of parental care. But access to medical services for the rural population, provision of rehabilitation facilities for people with disabilities, and others remain topical issues.
As it was reported earlier, the current poverty rate in Ukraine exceeds 50%. This was announced by Ella Libanova, the director of the Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
