An airport is planned to be built near Kramatorsk. This was announced by the head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration Pavlo Kyrylenko at a briefing.

“About airports: in the center and north of the region, Kramatorsk will remain. I am ready to take a step away from the existing dual-purpose airport Sarmat. Now we are working out locations. State Aviation Service has given requirements for the site. I set a task to have two or three locations besides Sarmat, an airfield where military planes can land,” Kyrylenko said.

Kyrylenko also stressed that he considers fears about the proximity of this location to the line of contact motivated and understands that in addition to the euphoria of creating an airport, there is also responsibility and that safety and health of passengers and the general population are important.

“This airport is located 42 km from the line of contact, but we must take into account the runway, which goes perpendicularly. There are certain risks that cannot be bypassed or omitted. I spoke about this personally with Volodymyr Zelensky,” explained the head of the Regional State Administration.

According to him, “there should be an airport in the developing region.”

“Not one, but several,” Kyrylenko added.

Kramatorsk is located 40-45 km from the front line.

As it was reported, the possibility of opening the airport in Donetsk region was considered even under the previous government.

In March 2019, former President Petro Poroshenko instructed to work on the launch of an airport in Mariupol, located near the line of military activity. The head of the State Aviation Administration Oleksandr Bilchuk responded that it would be possible to launch an airport in Mariupol for civil aviation only after the reduction of the military conflict buffer zone.

The largest airport in Donbas named after Prokofiev was completely destroyed in 2014-2015 during the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Luhansk airport was destroyed in 2014 as a result of attack by tactical missiles "Tochka" from the Russian territory.

Kramatorsk became the center of the Donetsk region on October 11, 2014 after the occupation by Russian militants.

Kramatorsk already has a non-functioning airport. In 2019, it was included in the list of promising facilities for construction in 2019-2021. It would’ve had an area of 3,000 square meters and provide a platform for four large aircraft.
