In Ukraine, about 40% of the population will get through coronavirus until May 2021. There is no sense to block the epidemic process; it should be passed as Ukrinform reported citing Head of Immunorehabilitation Lab of Mechnikov Institute of Microbiology and Immunology Andriy Volyansky.
“In fact, it is unknown when we will get it (the vaccine against Covid-19, - 112.international) and its amount; how many people will be vaccine for free. In my opinion, this discussion is premature and Ukraine will survive the first wave before the vaccine development. Currently, we need to think about the fact that about 40% of the population will be infected until May and we might predict about 40,000 lethal cases. Meanwhile, we have about 10,000 as of today,” Volyansky said.
The immunologist also stated that any lockdown would help the largest possible number of people to wait for vaccination; however, he does not consider it reasonable because people should get through the virus and survive the first wave of Covid-19.
“Despite the fact that many chains have been already launched, they could be stopped. But I do not understand why it should be done: it is necessary that people got infected, survive the first wave. There is no sense to block the epidemic process; it should be passed anyway,” he said.
As we reported, 11,968 new cases of coronavirus infection were observed in Ukraine over the last 24 hours. In total, 557,657 people have fallen ill with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in the country: 250,983 (+6786) have recovered, and 9,856 (+159) have succumbed to the disease.
