Forest Fire in Chernobyl Zone covers 130 hectares

The ignition of dry grass and reeds occurred on the 29th of June, at 5:10 p.m.(Kyiv time), the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said. The fire spread with flames over 130 hectares in area of urban-type settlement Poliske, former town in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, part of Kyiv Oblast.

117 people and 24 appliances were deployed to fight the fire. As of 7:30 a.m. June 30, crews are trying to bring the fire under control in the dense forest in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Emergency services intend to use firefighting aircraft to localize and contain the blaze in woodlands.

The head of SES Mykola Chechotkin notes that the situation in the Chernobyl dense forest is controlled by firefighters.

This year firefighters have responded to wildfire, which occurred on April 28, and threatened to spread toward the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
