86 cases of the use of the force against the journalists were spotted in Ukraine in 2018 as Ukrinform reported citing National Union of Journalist of Ukraine.

“We note the situation with the physical security of the journalists in Ukraine as an emergency because we spot unusually high level of the physical aggression against the journalists, which is accompanied by the systematic impunity for the second year in a row. On the results of our monitoring, 86 incidents of the physical aggression against the journalists spotted in 2018, ”Head of National Union of Journalist Sergy Tomilenko stated.

He noted that the common citizens usually attack the journalists. At the same time, 12 cases of the attacks at the journalists committed by the officials and lawmakers were spotted in 2018 as well as 10 cases of the attacks committed by the police officers and law enforcers, including with the use of the weapons.

“Besides, there is a particularly embarrassing tendency spotted by the index of physical security of the journalists such as the devastating increase in the attacks at the women-workers of the mass media. In fact, the number of the attacks at women-journalists increased by 50% in 2018,” Tomilenko noted.

Kyiv and Kyiv region with 29 attacks are the leaders in the number of them.

Totally, there were 175 attacks at the mass media workers in 2017 and 2018.

“We think that it is extremely high level and we demand from the law enforcement bodies and politicians to assume the efforts to stop the wave of the physical aggression in Ukraine. We have the information about each of 175 incidents from the suffered colleagues,” he emphasized.

Earlier we reported that 94 journalists and media workers were killed while on duty in the world in 2018 and it is more for 12 persons than in 2017. Besides, far-right opponents of the March in support of transgender people in Kyiv attacked Canadian journalist Michael Colborne.
