700 domestic violence cases considered in Ukraine since beginning of 2019

Since January until September 2019, over 400 criminal offenses on domestic violence were sent to the court, as UNN reported citing Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine.

During the nine months of 2019, 700 criminal proceedings on domestic violence were considered in Ukraine. Totally, 964 criminal proceedings were registered, including 264 closed criminal proceedings also due to the no offense. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, 424 cases were sent to the court.

As we reported, domestic violence response teams within the Polina Project will be launched across Ukraine.

On January 1, the law No. 2227-VIII, which provides criminal liability for domestic violence came into force in Ukraine. Domestic violence is intentional regular physical, psychological or economic abuse of a partner or former partner, family member or relative, which leads to physical or psychological suffering, health problems, impairment, emotional dependence or worsening of quality of life of the victims. For this the criminal faces 50-240 hours of public works or arrest for up to six months, restriction of liberty for up to five years or imprisonment for up to two years.
