At the moment when the fire broke out, 69,500 tons of ammunition were at the depot of the armoury of Defense Ministry near Ichnia, Chernihiv region. Stepan Poltorak, the Defense Minister of Ukraine claimed this as 112 Ukraine reported.
“At the moment of the incident, 69,500 tons of ammunition were at the depot, 43,000 of them could be used. Other 18,000 tons are the elements of munitions and parts of them,” the minister said.
Also, the munitions, which were not in the service of an army and should be disposed, were held at the depot.
The minister also reported that totally, the armoury in Ichnia district can hold 127,000 tons of ammunition.
“At the beginning of 2014, there were 125,000 tons of ammunition. During the last year, we redeployed 56,000 tons of munitions to other places, bases and depots. It is about 1,500 wagons and 50 rolling stocks,” Poltrak noted.
$465,563 were allocated, including $343,780 financed, for the developing of the storage conditions of the ammunition in 2018.
Reportedly, an explosion on the sixth armoury occurred in Ichnia, Chernihiv region on October 9.
The air-space within 30 km is shut down, traffic and railway movement are stopped due to the emergency situation.
Ukraine’s Defence Ministry reports that as at 7 am, October 9, the intensity of the explosions was 2-3 explosions per second.
Reportedly, the Military Prosecutor’s Office of the Central Region opened a criminal proceeding on the case of explosions on the ammunition depot in Ichnia.
Later the State Emergency Service reported that over 12,000 people were evacuated from Ichnia and the adjacent localities within the radius of 16 kilometers. Blasts of various degree of intensity are still heard there.
