53 people in Ukraine suffered from botulism in 2018, four of them died

In Ukraine, since the beginning of the year, 53 people suffered from botulism and four of them have died. This was reported by the press service of Ukraine’s Health Ministry.

"In Ukraine, there is a seasonal increase in the incidence of botulism - since the beginning of 2018 there were 46 cases of botulism, 53 people suffered from it, 4 of them died," the report said.

It is noted that a new case of botulism was recorded quite recently, - on June 27 in Kherson region. A few days later, the patient was injected with anti-botulism serum. At the moment, its condition is stable.

On June 30, the press center of  the State Service of Consumer Rights reported that a woman have died due to botulism.

Botulism is a severe food poisoning by products containing botulinum toxin.

The pathogens of the disease multiply in anaerobic state (without oxygen) in the wrong conditions of food storage or transportation. The best way to protect your health is to refrain from eating food which quality is unknown doubtful. The risk factors include consumption of dried, salted and canned fish, canned food or meat products if they have not undergone heating.

As it was reported earlier, Ukraine is to start purchasing specific serums at the national level. The decree as of April 6, which approved the list of necessary specific serums.

11 items are included in the purchase list, serums and immunoglobulins from diphtheria, hydrophobia, tetanus, botulism and malaria. The representatives of the Healthcare Ministry inform that the government’s procurements through the international organizations make it possible to deliver new medication to Ukraine without a pre-registration of the producer.
