At least 250,000 people took part in the religions procession in Kyiv downtown on Friday, July 27, as the Information Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church reported.

The procession started on Volodymyr Hill, then the participants headed towards Kyiv Pechersk Lavra through Hrushevskyi Street. An all-night vigil is to be carried out there. The participants prayed for all the victims of the Euromaidan near the memorial cross on Hrushevskyi Street.

The decree of the President Viktor Yushchenko established the celebration on July 25, 2008. The holiday is being celebrated on July 28 annually.

Reportedly, a number of holy relics reach Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra - the main shrine of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).

Among the holy items will be the remains of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir (the ancient monarch who baptized Kyiv Rus, - 112 International), St. Andrew The First-Called, St. George The Conqueror and other saints, respected among Christians of the Eastern Rite.

The holy relics will be available for the worshippers at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on July 27 and 28, around the clock. They will also be seen publicly during the procession in Kyiv, which is slated for Friday. The worshippers will walk across the downtown city.

Kyiv police expect up to 100,000 people to join the festive events on Friday; the city center is shut down, and road traffic is limited in that area - for public safety reasons.

As we reported earlier, in 2016 religious procession started in Ternopil and Donetsk regions, brought the two groups of believers to enter Kyiv on July 26, meet on July 27 in Kiev at St. Vladimir's Hill, and together with the Orthodox Kyiv citizens and pilgrims proceed to Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The expected number was 30 000 participants, however, there were more than 4,500 pilgrims at Volodymyrska Hirka a year ago and around 6 000 people took part in the celebration of Baptism of Rus last year. Law enforcers expected a high number of provocations by pro-Russian activists or Kremlin-backed militants, tightening preventive measures, however, there were no serious violations reported.
