The State Bureau of Investigation (SIB) stated that the employees of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine caught red-handed tried to smuggle 16 kg of gold, $140,000, and cigarettes at the sum of 1.5 million hryvnias ($53,550), as the SIB reported.
The SIB also reported that diplomats were engaged in the illicit transfer of goods of the excisable group through the state border of Ukraine to the EU countries, using diplomatic immunity and privileges, as well as service transport.
“The driver of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland and one of the secretaries of the representative’s office of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine transferred goods of the excisable group at service loading-passenger minibus. An employee of the State Special Communications Service of Ukraine in the Zakarpattia region was involved in the mentioned activity and ex-employee of the embassy, as well as the son of a Special Communications Service employee – the current attaché on consular affairs of Ukraine’s Embassy in Poland,” the message said.
During the search, $140,000, €67,200, PLN 11,600, 16 kg of gold and 8,826 cigarette blocks at the sum of 1.5 million hryvnias ($53,550) were confiscated.
The preliminary qualification of the case is illicit production, storage, sale or transportation for sale of excisable goods.
As we reported, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba stated he recalled two Ukrainian diplomats from Poland. It is tied with their detention at the border during the attempt of smuggling.
