About 302,000 citizens of Ukraine were in need of psychiatric care in 2019. It is more than in 2018. This kind of medical care is very important and cannot be ignored. The Minister of Health of Ukraine Maksym Stepanov said this during a briefing on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.
"Since April 1, psychiatric hospitals have had the largest deficit. Psychiatric hospitals are on the verge of closure. This has especially affected specialized psychiatric hospitals, which treat patients with chronic mental illness, about 22,000 of them. We have taken some steps to co-finance these institutions, approved by the government anti-crisis package, but we need to know how we will move forward," he said.
According to Stepanov, the Ministry of Health has a corresponding concept for the development of psychiatric care in our country until 2030.
"I want to discuss with industry experts how we will develop, what changes need to be made to the concept, how to improve this field of medicine. We all understand that this area, like all medicine, needs significant reform. But it must be real reform, and not destruction," the head of the Ministry summed up.
As it was reported earlier, Stepanov declared that the underfunding of psychiatric hospitals in Ukraine makes almost 33 million dollars.
