Ukraine will consider the termination of membership in Interpol if Russian Aleksandr Prokopchuk becomes the president of the organization. Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov claimed, the press office of the ministry reported. The Minister together with Ukrainian mission is in the United Arab Emirates, where a voting for the new president of Interpol will take place on November 21.
According to Avakov, if the arguments of Ukraine, human rights defenders, and the leadership of other countries on the impossibility to appoint the Russian representative to the position are not heard, then it will consider ending the membership in Interpol.
"Possible Russian presidency in Interpol is absurd, it contradicts the spirit and goals of the organization. Ukraine will address the issue of the termination of the membership in Interpol, in case of electing Russian representative for the position of the president of Interpol," Avakov stated.
Interpol has to re-elect the chairman of the organization after its head Meng Hongwei went missing. Therefore, it was reported that China conducts an investigation on him concerning corruption.
Major General of the Russian police Aleksandr Prokopchuk is a favorite of the elections of Interpol’s head. In 2006 - 2011, he served as a deputy head of National Central Bureau of Interpol of Russia’s Internal Ministry. Then, he became the head of this organization. In 2016, the Major General became the Vice-President of Interpol.
Arsen Avakov, Ukraine’s Internal Minister, thinks that Russia is an aggressor state, so its perspective to head the Interpol is a threat to the entire world.
