For many reasons Ukraine does not have any prospects concerning the EU membership for now, as Hugues Mingarelli, EU Ambassador to Ukraine, stated at the roundtable session on Ukraine’s European choice after the Revolution of Dignity (a revolution in Ukraine in 2014, - ed.), Unian reports.

“Turkey along with Balkan countries are the only states which conduct talks to join the European Union. They have a specific prospect for EU membership. As to Ukraine, there is no prospect,” the Ambassador said.

According to him, the aim of the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement is to facilitate the political association and economic integration, but it does not give any prospect for EU membership.

“It is a big disappointment for our Ukrainian partners as they wanted to have a membership prospect, but for now the European Union could not offer this prospect due to certain reasons,” he stressed.

Earlier, Ukraine signed the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement after the Revolution of Dignity in 2014. The Verkhovna Rada, the European Parliament as well as the national parliaments of all EY member states ratified the agreement during 2014-2017.

The Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement came into force on September 2017. Later, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko stated that the Agreement was implemented only by 15%.
