German Chancellor Angela Merkel is happy with the results of two-day summit of the European Council, which ended on June 23 in Brussels. She said this during the press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. The event was broadcast at the website of the European Council.
"We have held the meeting which brought the new spirit of confidence… This was the council of vivacity and confidence," Merkel noted.
According to her, the coordinated positions of Germany and France became one of the reasons for productive work during the meeting with EU leaders. Berlin and Paris, according to Merkel, are the one to promote ideas on strengthening the union, as well as issues relating to fighting the causes of migration.
Chancellor stressed that 27 counties have to take care of their future, especially in the period when Brexit negotiations started.
The discussions on the issues of the future joint defense alliance and security were super productive, according to Merkel, as "qualitative steps" have been made.
Confirmation of adherence to Paris climate agreement by EU countries was important for German Chancellor personally.
European Council also confirmed its readiness to develop free trade, which is especially important in the times when "the issue of protectionism is the major concern in the agenda", Merkel said.
According to Macron, "if Germany and France will speak one voice, Europe will progress". He specified that this is not the only condition, but it is still very important. Both countries agree that European Union is the best protection for confronting global challenges, French president said.
