Shock from occupation of Crimea by Russia helped Ukrainian community to rethink the contribution of Crimean Tatars to united Ukraine. This was reported by Roman Waschuk, the Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, during international forum discussing "Crimea under occupation: Consequences for Ukraine and the world", according to Interfax Ukraine.

"The shock from occupation helped Ukrainian people to re-evaluate and finally appreciate the historic contribution of Crimean Tatars to the shared history of this country and view the national and cultural factor of Crimean autonomy in Ukraine from another angle," Waschuk noted.

The Ambassador stressed that Crimean Tatar diaspora is actively cooperating with Ukrainian and even Russian representatives in supporting Ukraine.
