Italy suspects Russia of cyber-attacks during many months, carried out in 2016 and lasting for 4 months. The correspondence of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was target of the attack. This was reported by The Guardian referring to the source in Italian government.
As the official from Italian government informed, cyber-attack started last spring and lasted more than four months. Hackers did not reach the encrypted system used for classified information.
According to the publication, local and regional MFA departments have been attacked, embassies and diplomatic officers, who are sending reports to Rome regarding the meetings with foreign officials, were also affected.
The attack did not affect Paolo Gentiloni, the current Prime Minister of Italy, who earlier served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. As the edition informed, he did not use the email being the Minister.
