Pedro Agramunt, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), explained his visit to Syria together with the MPs from Russian parliament. This was reported on Facebook by Leonid Yemets, the Ukrainian people’s deputy from the National Front party.

"PACE president announced that he made a mistake flying to Syria on Russian aircraft and meeting with tyrant Assad. But, in our opinion, penance is not enough. Unfortunately, the impeachment procedure for PACE President is not provided in the regulation. Thus we need either to change the rules or work towards voluntary resignation of Pedro Agramunt. And this is the position of not only Ukrainian delegation, but also of many others. We will see soon enough if our votes will suffice," Leonid Yemets wrote.

Beyond that, Ukrainian MP noted that Agramunt claimed Russians "fooled and set him up".

"According to him, problem was caused by the fact that "the visit became object of manipulation by separate Russian media", which did not inform about private character of the meeting and made it look like as if he supports Assad; Agramunt assured that it is not true," UNIAN specifies.

This Agramunt noted that it was his private visit not connected with PACE work, however admitted that he should have informed representatives of the other political groups about his intentions.

Along with that, there is a number of obvious manipulations in the explanation of PACE president. Particularly, he announced that his trip was financed by Syrian parliament; but there is a video showing how Agramunt is walking down the ladder of the plane of Russian Defense Ministry which arrived in Damascus from Moscow.

Agramunt said that the aim of the visit was the desire to see consequences of tragedy in Aleppo, however he admitted in the end that he didn’t go to Aleppo unlike other delegation members.

As Leonid Yemets also informed, PACE President said that he would not resign voluntarily.

Assembly’s Bureau was not able to find enough votes to consider separate resolution on the visit of PACE President to Syria. However, the Assembly is to consider complex resolution on situation in Syria in summer, Agramunt’s visit will be the part of it.
