Italy tightens measures due to coronavirus, halting production

Italian authorities decided to take the next step in tightening measures to combat coronavirus, suspending production in a number of industries. This decision was announced by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, reports Corriere della Sera.

"We are facing the most serious crisis that the country is experiencing after the Second World War. The death of many fellow citizens is a pain that resumes every day," the prime minister said before announcing a decision to suspend virtually all production activities.

According to the decree of Conte, work should be stopped at enterprises which activities are not vital and not critical for the whole of Italy.

Pharmacies and shops still do not fall under this ban.

The restrictions will apply at least until the end of the quarantine period in Italy on April 3.

The government guarantees citizens the provision of basic utilities, as well as postal, insurance, financial, transportation services.

On March 12, Conte announced that all commercial activities were temporarily suspended in the country, all retail stores were closed, with the exception of grocery stores and pharmacies. Prior to this, Italy restricted travel around the country, canceled all public events and suspended the national football championship.

Later, Italian authorities in several provinces limited the ability of citizens to walk in parks or engage in physical activity on city streets.
