The European Union above all should be included into the Normandy format. Radoslaw Sikorski, a Polish politician and journalist, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that in his interview to Elina Beketova, 112 Ukraine TV channel TV presenter.

“I don’t know the details of these initiatives, but for peace to return clearly both parties have to want it and both and both parties need to be bound by the terms of any agreement. But of course in this case it wound be easiest if Russia simply withdrew its personnel and its support from across the international border and restored the control of the international border to the right for the sovereign state of Ukraine,” Sikorski said.

According to Sikorski, Russia is trying to limit Ukraine in their foreign policy.

“The Russian Federation would like to make sure that Ukraine limits its foreign policy to Russia’s desires, that Russia would like to use this frozen conflict in order to permanently prevent Ukraine from joining Western institutions. That’s the most difficult thing for a sovereign state to agree to,” Sikorsky notes.

“I just hope that the Russian Federation has realized that the European Union is serious, that the sanctions have been prolonged and will continue to be prolonged. On the other hand we are also serious about Ukraine becoming a country closely associated with the European Union and you now have a material prove of this,” he said.

“I was never fond of the Normandy format because I was not inclusive of the United States and Poland of course. The European Union above all should be included. Because it’s Ukraine’s desire for a deepened comprehensive free trade zone with the European Union that Russia finds so unacceptable. And so the EU should have a leading role in such a negotiation,” said Sikorsky.
